No luck: no layers, no fading Auto Levels, not even Capture NX 2’s opacity settings. Capture NX 2: History, Masking & OpacityĬonsidering the above, it would have been nice to limit the damage created by Auto-adjustment settings. Not sure what the Auto-levels or Auto LCH buttons were created for, but nothing I shoot, apparently.

The two predecessors of this software duo were far more user-friendly and instantly intelligible.ĭiabolical. the Tone menu, so if you don’t find adjustments in one, look in the other. How good are you at puzzles – and how much time have you got? To see the edits you have made to an image, look for a tiny tick in the right top menu panel, or anything not labeled “Original”, open the section and piece together what exactly you’ve changed. Nothing is instantly intelligible for speedy processing: Ratings lack contrast, are not visually interpretable (one star with a number in it) – and unhelpfully, respond to mouse hovers: thus giving the appearance of having been applied, when in fact they have not. The GUIs lack clarity & contrast – especially in all Views involving thumbnails. Learn the shortcuts (some of which are even sensible, like “C” for crop) to avoid this. The Zoom tools especially are often unshakable through clicking onto a different tool alone and don’t reset/fit either by navigating to a different image. You can mark images for deletion in ViewNX-i – but not in Capture NX-D. Take the simple task of rating images: shortcut Cmd ⌘1 – ⌘5 in ViewNX-i – but Shift ⇧ 1 – ⇧5 in Capture NX-D. However, previous folder paths can be “register(ed) to menu” in a folder drop down … look for that tiny arrow in an almost indistinguishable from the background box, which reveals hidden menu treasure.Įvery program in the world may offer “recent files” on the File menu – not Capture NX-D. Obviously, that would have been way too user-friendly. Whoever designed this software obviously thought that users have plenty of time on their hands to find image folders, manipulate curves (Levels & LCH), tick a multiple individual boxes to achieve partial results, and flick backwards and forwards between views to see image basics (like ratings) – well, we don’t. Here’s why: Capture NX-D screen shot of the GUI in the largest View mode that offers toolsįorget quick editing. The “terrible duo”, as I mentally refer to it, has tested my patience to the limits since. Oh well – it’s obviously one of those moments – where you’ve just got to learn some new software.ĭownloaded Nikon’s new RAW editor, Capture NX-D, and the new image browser, ViewNX-i. Adobe Photoshop? Get the big guns out for a simple task like RAW adjustments? A quick colour accuracy test convinced me otherwise. My existing software, Nikon ViewNX 2 (browser & quick editor) and Nikon Capture NX 2 (RAW editor, U-point technology & blemish removal), were unable to edit the RAW files produced by the D7200. Not to worry let’s give Adobe Lightroom a try then … no – presently doesn’t want to know the files either. Capture NX 2 can’t read the RAW (.NEF) files created by the D7200

I was reasonably happy with the camera – until I downloaded the images to my Mac – and found that a NEF wasn’t just a NEF. The D7200 seemed to have roughly the specification I was looking for DX sensor, decent ISO, sufficient external controls, 100% viewfinder coverage, compatibility with all lenses and Wi-Fi.

I also felt that I needed to upgrade the light sensitivity of my DSLRs, as well as the processing engine. Having used the Nikon D90 and the Nikon D3 in recent years as my DX / FX combo, I was keen to see what 14 bit RAW images would capture in Dynamic Range. In the end, I just gave up on waiting for a successor of the D300s.
